Game #1 – Death’s Door

Released in 2021 by Acid Nerve and published by Devolver Digital

Ah shit, here we go again

It’s a brand new year with new games to play, the backlog has grown exponentially since Christmas but we kick off 2026 with a game from 2021. A game that I’ve previously fallen off but always looked at. A game that I didn’t need to play until Liam decided to put it as part of the challenge for 2026 – Death’s Door.

An action-adventure game where you play as a wee crow thrown into a mystery involving reaping souls, loads of doors, eternal life and many, many monsters.

That’s the formalities out that way – how was it then?

I loved it. It was the right amount of silly and serious. Challenging encounters and platforming that you are rewarded for mastering. Boss fights can be easy to master but are still fun plus they are scarce, so feel rewarding when completed.

Shrek’s ruler. Coolest name ever.

One of the real highlights is the progression of upgrades.

You get obvious weapon upgrades, you might find some interesting choices there. You get new abilities that unlock new combat options but also help with traversal through the world – think like bombs and the hookshot in Zelda and you’re pretty much there.

Add onto this, when you’re collecting souls, you can buy permanent upgrades to your crow. You want to be stronger, you can. Faster, sure! Etc etc etc

Anyhoo, this is by no means a review of the game but it’s definitely a game worth your time. If you don’t mind picking up Game Pass then it’s on there. It’s available pretty much everywhere else and you’ll absolutely squeeze 10+ hours into your time with it (depending how nosey you are for unlocks)

4 out or 5 berries.
